The winner of a pasty crimping competition said she was “very surprised” as she had not “made a pasty in years”.

The event was held at the Great Cornish Food Store in Truro on Saturday and Sue Mountford was crowned the winner.

The contestants were tasked with crimping three pasties against the clock, which were then judged to determine the winner.

Ms Mountford said it was “hilarious” she had won and added she “doesn’t normally make pasties”.

Ms Mountford said pasty making was a family tradition that was “in her blood” and she had been making them for about 50 years.

But she said she was reluctant to make them regularly because her homemade pastry was not good enough.

“I don’t usually make them because they’re rubbish… the last time I made one was years ago, she said.

“I’m very surprised. I can’t believe it, it’s just amazing.”

The competition had attracted Yuriko Shigyo who came from Japan to Cornwall to enter the event.

She said she hoped it would encourage “further exchanges” between the UK and Japan.

She added: “I want to tell the world that there is a lot of delicious food in the UK.”
