Gaz and Yin were married for more than 30 years before separating and remaining friends

A man and a woman from Kent have spoken about their “incredibly challenging experience” on Race Across the World.

Gaz and Yin feature in the current season of the BBC One show as they look to win £20,000 in the race from The Great Wall of China to the southernmost tip of India.

On BBC Radio Kent, Yin said: “It was an incredibly challenging experience. I think me and Gaz just winged it quite often.”

Gaz said: “It was a complete shock to the system, the senses overload, and then also you’ve got to compete with the actual race as well.”

Yin added: “You just never know what’s going to come round the corner and you have to react instantly.

“There were times when we’d look at each other and just be completely blank, but there were other times where we did have a kind of plan that we put together, and when it worked it was an amazing feeling.”

The pair had been married for more than 30 years before deciding to go their separate ways a few years ago, although they have remained good friends.

Gaz said: “I think we just sort of realised, we didn’t want to get bitter, we didn’t want it to end all nasty, [we] always wanted to remain friends.”

Yin decided to apply for the show after her partner suddenly passed away.

She said: “Last year, when we made the application, I struggled to find anything of enjoyment in life and I’ve seen this on television and thought: ‘This is the vehicle that’s going to make me engage with life again’. So on a whim I made the application.”

Yin got a phone call from the show two-and-a-half hours after applying.

Season five first aired on 23 April and is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
