Police are investigating after about 11 sheep were killed in Aberdeenshire.

The sheep were found in the Aberchirder area between 9 and 10 January.

Police Scotland described it as a “possible incident of sheep worrying” as a result of an “attack by an unknown animal”.

Dog owners and walkers have been urged to keep pets under control in rural and farmland areas.

Some other sheep were also injured in the incident.

A police spokesperson said: “We are asking for members of the public to come forward if they saw a dog off lead in the area at the time, or have information which may assist us.

“At this time it is not clear what has attacked these sheep, and our inquiries are ongoing to establish what has happened.”

The statement added: “Whilst many owners are unaware of the impact their dogs are having on livestock, it is their responsibility to ensure attacks and worrying don’t happen.”
