PM condemns ‘far-right thuggery’ after Rotherham hotel violence

Flames from a bin fire, started as the demonstration grew increasingly ugly, were later extinguished after a short time.

One injured police officer was seen being escorted away by two colleagues, while a BBC reporter saw one man arrested as officers tried to regain control of the scene and push the crowd back.

Fence panels ripped from the properties of nearby residents were among the missiles thrown at police, as the crowd was later pushed into a retreat away from the hotel.

South Yorkshire Police has been contacted for comment.

One woman, who lives locally and joined the anti-immigration protest, earlier told the BBC’s Navtej Johal the scenes at the hotel are “absolutely barbaric”, adding “this is not what we’re here for”.
