The Gavin and Stacey Christmas special broke numerous records but one scene would not have been the same without a little help from a friend.

Oscar Hartland, who played Neil the Baby, left the cast “bawling their eyes out” as he performed Blackbird in the finale.

But it took a frantic email from James Corden, who plays his on-screen dad Smithy, to Sir Paul McCartney to find a way around The Beatles royalty costs.

Hartland, who is about to embark on his debut tour, spoke to BBC Radio Wales about the moment it was confirmed they had got the green light for the song.
