Patients had to be evacuated from a hospital ward after a small fire started in a bathroom.

Four fire engines were sent to Glasgow Royal Infirmary after the alarm was raised on Ward 62, at about 09:32.

A small number of patients were moved to another ward while the blaze was contained.

Emergency services left the hospital just before 12:00 but the ward remains closed until a safety assessment is completed.

A spokesperson for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said: “We would like to thank our staff and the fire brigade for their immediate response to ensure the safety of our patients following a small fire.

“A small number of patients were safely evacuated and moved to another ward while the fire was immediately contained.

“The ward will remain closed until a safety assessment for the return of patients is completed.”
