Pacific pocket mice released into the wild in California

US wildlife officials released 50 captive-bred Pacific pocket mice into Camp Pendleton, California to help rebuild the endangered species.

The mice, once presumed extinct due to habitat loss, were rediscovered in 1993.

The recovery operation involved the Camp Pendleton Environmental Security Department, San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, and US Fish and Wildlife Service.
