Owen Cooper tells Timothée Chalamet ‘I’m not Scouse’ at awards

Hollywood star Timothée Chalamet recently quashed rumours that he was the anonymous Liverpool rapper EsDeeKid.

But his connection to the city is still the talk of social media after his exchange with rising star Owen Cooper was captured on camera during the Critics’ Choice Awards in California.

In the clip, filmed by E News, the Marty Supreme actor asks Cooper, 16, about his phone background, which the Adolescence star appears to confirm is a tribute to the late Liverpool FC footballer Diogo Jota.

Chalamet, 30, responds with “Diogo Jota RIP”, before asking if Cooper was from Liverpool.

Cooper, who grew up in Warrington, Cheshire, which is about 16 miles (26km) away, appears to say “I’m not,” before adding: “I don’t have a Scouse accent.”

The exchange happened after Chalamet picked up the Best Actor prize on Sunday for his performance in Marty Supreme.

While the Critics’ Choice Awards, held in Santa Monica, can boost momentum as the Oscars race heats up, they are regarded as being less influential than many other precursor ceremonies.

Cooper took home the prize for best supporting actor in a limited series for Adolescence.

The psychological crime drama, one of Netflix’s most-watched titles of last year, follows a 13-year-old boy arrested for the murder of a classmate.

Cooper thanked his co-stars, collaborators and family in a heartwarming speech.

“The past year has been a complete whirlwind for me and my family,” he said. “Honestly, it’s changed our lives forever and we’re forever grateful.

“Receiving this award means more to me than I can put even into words, to be standing here with you all tonight is something that I’ll never forget.”

His co-stars Stephen Graham and Erin Doherty respectively won best actor and best supporting actress in a limited series.
