Robert MacIntyre says he is “in the place I want to be” after his three-under 67 opening round score at the Open Championship.
The 29-year-old Scot picked up four birdies and one bogey during his first ever competitive round at Royal Birkdale.
He starts his second round on Friday at 12:25 BST.
“Delighted,” MacIntyre told BBC Radio 5 Live. “A very solid round of golf.
“Very disciplined and happy to save par on the 18th. Sometimes I laid myself too far back but had to accept it and deal with a longer shot in. I feel like it was a great job.
“Some of the putts shaved the hole early on, but that is golf. The problem is managing the ball and staying out of these bunkers.”
MacIntyre has previously tied for sixth, seventh and eighth at the Open Championship and was confident prior to his seventh tournament appearance, saying he had “a chance”.
And he added after round one: “There is the potential of a low score, but I am not going to worry about that.
“I am in the place I want to be.”
