Olympics 2024: Top five stories from day four of Paris Games including Biles, Hales and Richards

Simone Biles inspired the United States to victory in the women’s team gymnastics event, while Britain’s Nathan Hayles won Team GB’s third gold of the 2024 Paris Olympics in the men’s shooting on day four.

American superstar Biles led her team to victory and her first gold medal since Rio 2016 after pulling out of several events at Tokyo 2020 three years ago with the ‘twisties’ – a disorientating mental block.

Hayles secured Great Britain’s first medal of the day as he triumphed in the men’s trap final, setting a Games record in the process.

The 28-year-old, on his Olympics debut, shot 48 out of 50 to hold his nerve and claim Team GB’s third gold of Paris 2024.

His success came on the day a heatwave hit Paris – and there was also disruption to the triathlon events.

With the water quality in the River Seine still deemed too poor to swim in, the men’s race has been pushed back to Wednesday and remains in doubt.

Elsewhere, Great Britain’s equestrian team began their attempt for dressage glory with Becky Moody – Charlotte Dujardin’s replacement following her withdrawal last week – reaching Sunday’s individual final.

Matt Richards – one of six GB medallists on Monday – survived a scare in the swimming, while rowing pair Mathilda Hodgkins Byrne and Rebecca Wilde qualified for the women’s double sculls final on Thursday.

Briton Kieran Reilly qualified for Wednesday’s men’s BMX freestyle final but defending women’s champion Charlotte Worthington missed out.

In the hockey, GB’s men’s team remain unbeaten after a late fightback to draw 2-2 against the Netherlands in their third group game.

But Team GB’s interest in the tennis singles ended as Jack Draper faded in the sweltering heat and there was more heartache in the judo.
