Olympics 2024: Amber Rutter named in Team GB shooting squad two months after giving birth

Amber Rutter has been named in Team GB’s shooting team for the Paris Olympics just two months after giving birth.

The former world champion, 26, welcomed her first child, Tommy, on 25 April.

Rutter, who competed at Rio 2016 under her maiden name of Hill, missed the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 after contracting Covid-19 on the eve of the Games.

She considered quitting the sport after the disappointment but will now compete in her second Olympics.

“I’m really excited,” Rutter told BBC Sport.

“To receive that call and have that confirmation that I’ve made the team for Paris 2024 is just an amazing feeling.”

Rutter said going to Paris was “always planned”, but her participation could not be decided until after the birth of her child.

With Tommy at such a young age, Rutter’s husband will stay in the UK with their newborn as she competes in the skeet event in France.

Rutter said taking the family to Paris would have been a distraction.

“I just know for performance, it’s just not the right thing, because as soon as Tommy cries my mind is completely on him, and just literally looking after anything he needs,” said Rutter, a four-time European Championship gold medallist.

“So we’ve made the decision for him not to be there, but we’re going to have a lot of celebrations and everything when I get back.”

Seonaid McIntosh, the former world champion, has been picked in the mixed team air rifle alongside Michael Bargeron, while trap trio Matt Coward-Holley, Nathan Hales and Lucy Hall make up the rest of the team.
