Police officers ran through gardens and scaled a fence in order to catch a prolific shoplifter.

The pursuit came after 38-year-old Scott Butcher stole cleaning products, meat, sweets and chocolate from shops in Colchester.

He was chased by officers in the city during March after they found him hiding in a property against its owner’s wishes. Butcher, of no fixed address, went on to admit 11 theft offences and 10 breaches of a criminal behaviour order at Ipswich Crown Court.

Essex Police released footage of his arrest after he was jailed for eight months on 23 May.
