Northampton and Corby driving theory test fraudster jailed

A man has been jailed after being caught taking driving theory tests on behalf of others in exchange for payment.

Aaron Kumar, 28, previously of Cambridge Street in Leicester, pleaded guilty to six counts of fraud by false representation when he appeared at Northampton Crown Court.

The offences took place between 2021 and 2024 at test centres across the country, including Corby and Northampton.

Kumar was sentenced to one year and 10 months in prison.

Northamptonshire Police said Kumar charged his clients £250 plus expenses to sit the test on their behalf.

He was finally caught on 15 January 2024 at Corby’s Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency centre, when staff recognised him and alerted police.

Officers arrived while he was completing a test and asked whether he had given over his real name.

He initially claimed he had, before quickly admitting his true identity when challenged.

In court, he was also disqualified from obtaining or holding a driving licence for three years and 11 months, and was ordered to pay £3,296 in prosecution costs.

Investigating officer PC Harry Cory said: “I am pleased that Aaron Kumar has been jailed, as it goes to show that economic crime does not pay and that you will eventually be caught and brought to justice.”

He also criticised those who paid Kumar to take their tests, saying: “The driving theory test exists for a reason and to try and pay your way out of taking one is disgraceful.

“Driving is a privilege which is earnt through both a theory and practical test, and no-one should be able to skip out on either.”
