New Mid and East Antrim mayor appointed after death of incumbent

Mid and East Antrim Council have appointed a new mayor after the death of the previous office holder last month.

Alderman William McCaughey said he was taking over the role “with a heavy heart”, following the passing of Beth Adger.

The Democratic Unionist Party politician added that he was “honoured to take up the chain of office” for a second time, having previously served as mayor between 2021 and 2022.

Alderman McCaughey will hold the role until until the next annual general meeting of the council, currently scheduled for June.

Following his appointment, he said that he was looking forward “to working along with the deputy mayor, elected members, council officers and the citizens of our borough”.

He also paid tribute to his predecessor, describing her has a “beacon of strength and dedication for so many years”.

“She tirelessly worked for her community, offering guidance, assistance, and counsel,” he added.

The role of mayor includes a number of duties including presiding over council meetings.
