‘My mum was run over in Coventry – now we want action’

A daughter whose mother was hit by a motorbike outside her house in Coventry said residents are “pulling together” to demand safety measures on two roads.

Lorette Turner said people living on Winston Avenue and Monkswood Crescent in Henley Green feel ignored after the council rejected a petition seeking measures to tackle speeding.

Residents told the BBC that speeding is a persistent problem and fear someone could be seriously hurt or killed if action was not taken.

However, the council said police data showed no recorded personal injury collisions on the roads in the last three years, meaning they do not meet the threshold for priority safety works.

Instead, it plans to carry out a speed survey and has pointed residents towards the Community Speed Watch scheme.

Turner said her mother’s incident was reported to the police and it is a “blatant lie from the council that there have been no recorded personal injury collisions on the roads in the last three years”.

“They clearly have done no investigation, the speed people travel down here can easily reach 70 or 80mph and it’s just not safe for people,” she said.

A council spokesperson said a speed survey was carried out on both roads that showed the “majority of drivers were travelling within the 30mph limit and the number of recorded collisions was low compared to other roads in the city”.
