A man has been charged after allegedly using explosives in an attempt to steal from a cash machine.

The facility, at Hedgeley Services in Powburn, Northumberland, was on fire when police arrived on 12 May.

A 45-year-old was arrested at Olivers Mill, Morpeth, on Wednesday where a small number of improvised explosive devices were also found.

He is due to appear at North Tyneside Magistrates’ Court charged with conspiracy to steal, conspiracy to cause explosions and making an explosive substance.

A cordon was put in place and an explosive ordinance disposal team called out to the building at Olivers Mill, which is a former flour mill converted into apartments.

A second suspect, a 56-year-old man, has been released on police bail after being arrested in Bedford on Wednesday.

Officers say those responsible for the explosion had fled empty handed when the cash machine failed to open.
