Moment Paul Doyle was arrested and told police ‘my life is ruined’

Doyle told police his actions “ruined so many people’s lives” as he was arrested

Liverpool parade attacker Paul Doyle told police the “rest of my life is ruined” as he was pulled into the back of a police van moments after the rampage.

He hit more than 100 people in the space of two minutes on 26 May at Liverpool’s victory parade and was only stopped after a bystander managed to get inside the automatic vehicle and forced its gear selector into ‘park’ mode.

The 54-year-old was arrested at the scene in Water Street just after 18:00 BST and charged later that week.

Doyle pleaded guilty has been sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court to 21 years and six months.

Judge Andrew Menary KC said his actions were not ones of “momentary recklessness” but Doyle simply lost his temper in the rampage.

He told Doyle: “It is almost impossible to comprehend how any right-thinking person could act as you did.

“To drive a vehicle into crowds of pedestrians with such persistence and disregard for human life defies ordinary understanding.”

The judge added: “Your actions caused horror and devastation on a scale not previously encountered by this court.”
