Michelle O’Neill: Trailblazing Irish assistant referee retires

Irish official Michelle O’Neill, who was an assistant referee at the 2019 Women’s World Cup final, has announced her retirement.

O’Neill officiated at three World Cups, the 2021 Olympic Games and at the 2019 men’s Super Cup final between Liverpool and Chelsea in Istanbul.

In doing so, she was involved in the first all-female refereeing team to officiate a men’s Super Cup final.

She made history in 2019 by becoming the first Irish official to be part of a World Cup final as the United States defeated the Netherlands in France.

O’Neill also officiated at the third-place match at the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand and, on a local level, was a regular in the men’s and women’s League of Ireland.

The Wexford official said her 18-year career as an official had been “an incredible journey”.

“It’s been one filled with unforgettable moments and immense pride.

“Officiating at World Cups and Olympic Games has been a dream come true, and I am grateful for the opportunities and experiences this career has given me.

“Now, it is time for the next chapter.”
