Matheus Cunha: Wolves forward says he never considered leaving Premier League club in January

Wolves forward Matheus Cunha said he never considered leaving the club during the winter transfer window.

The 25-year-old had been linked with a move away from Molineux in January, with Arsenal, Spurs and Manchester United reported to have been interested.

However, he silenced transfer rumours by signing a new four-and-a-half-year contract earlier this month.

Cunha said Wolves had “opened the door” for him when they signed him, initially on loan, from Atletico Madrid in the weeks after he missed out on Brazil’s 2022 World Cup squad.

“I never think about leaving, honestly. I know I have a lot of things to do already and I always said that this was the club that gave me the chance to come back,” Cunha told Football Focus.

“They opened the door for me and I always felt I wanted to give back everything so to leave in this type of situation is hard.

“I am so happy to be here. I hope to continue doing good things.”

Cunha said he was “down” when he missed out on Qatar 2022, adding: “It is a little bit of depression. You go down, you don’t want to go to training, you don’t want to do things.

“I had good days in Atletico, but after there was a lot of doubt inside me.

“When Wolves came in, one of my dreams was playing in the Premier League and Wolves gave me the opportunity to be here.”

Cunha is Wolves’ leading scorer this season, having scored 11 goals in 23 Premier League matches going into Saturday’s match against Bournemouth.

However, Vitor Pereira’s side are in the thick of the relegation fight.

Asked if Wolves fans can still be excited for the remainder of the season, Cunha replied: “Of course they need to be excited. I keep saying ‘keep belief to the end’.

“We need to feel focused and confident to change the situation and I will do everything. I will hope I help everyone to be better and we solve the situation as fast as we can.”
