Actor Martin Clunes is to judge the main horse event at this year’s Royal Welsh Show.

The devoted equestrian will serve as a distinguished judge at the supreme horse championship in Llanelwedd, Powys, in July.

Animal-lover Clunes is best know for his portrayal of Dr Martin Ellingham in the television series Doc Martin.

He has kept horses for many years – and even took giant Clydesdale Bruce to meet hospice patients to cheer them up.

“It is a great honour to be invited to judge,” he said.

“The show is a highlight of the agricultural and equestrian calendar, and I am very much looking forward to seeing the exceptional standard of horses on display.”

The supreme horse championship takes place on the final day of the show, demonstrating examples of equine breeding, presentation, and performance.

The Royal Welsh Show said Clunes’ involvement added “an extra layer of prestige to what is already a highly anticipated competition”.
