Sunday’s Ligue 1 match between Marseille and Paris St-Germain at Stade Velodrome has been postponed with storms expected in the region.

Authorities issued an orange alert for flooding and thunderstorms in the Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur (PACA) region where Marseille is located.

The fixture was due to kick off at 20:45 local time (19:45 BST) but the forecast for heavy rain between 19:00 and 22:00 led to fears for fans’ safety.

“Rainfall could reach 70 to 90mm in some areas and locally 120mm in a few hours,” the PACA prefect said.

Marseille and PSG are yet to comment on the postponement of ‘Le Classique’ which is set to be rescheduled in due course.

Defending champions PSG have made a perfect start to the current campaign – winning all four games – and sit top of Ligue 1, with Marseille eighth after two wins and two defeats.
