Manchester City v Newcastle United: Manager Pep Guardiola not thinking about repeat Treble

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is not thinking about winning another Treble as his side prepare to face Newcastle United in their FA Cup quarter-final on Saturday.

They could become the first English side to win successive Trebles if they defend all three titles this campaign.

“The last two or three weeks of the season, I’ll think about that,” said Guardiola.

As well as their home FA Cup tie with Newcastle, City are third in the Premier League – a point behind Arsenal and Liverpool – and face Real Madrid in the last eight of the Champions League, fuelling hope of achieving more history.

“I don’t think about that,” added Guardiola. “Now it’s about tomorrow’s quarter-final.”

City will be without playmaker Kevin De Bruyne who is nursing a groin problem, and goalkeeper Ederson, who picked up a leg injury when fouling Darwin Nunez to concede a penalty in last weekend’s 1-1 draw at Liverpool.

Midfielder Jack Grealish has returned to training and could make an appearance on Saturday.

Anthony Gordon, who received his first senior England call-up this week, is set to feature for Newcastle despite picking up a knee injury in the 3-2 loss at Chelsea on Monday.

Defender Dan Burn, who was also withdrawn against Chelsea with a minor issue, is also likely to return.

Newcastle last reached the FA Cup semi-finals in 2005 under Graeme Souness when they were thrashed 4-1 by Manchester United.

“From minute one in the FA Cup, that was our aim [to return to Wembley],” said Newcastle boss Eddie Howe.

“We’ve done everything we can and navigated tough games. We’ve managed to find a way to the quarter-finals and don’t want to waste this opportunity.

“We’ll have a right go. We’ll attack it and we’ll try to progress into the next round.”
