Man in court after Hayes woman killed while asleep with her baby

A man broke into the home of a young mother and fatally stabbed her as she slept in bed with her husband and three-month-old baby, a court has heard.

Daniel Sean James, 46, is accused of attacking Kirandeep Kaur, 24, in her home on Uxbridge Road in Hayes, west London, on Sunday morning.

He then allegedly jumped out of a window and broke both ankles before being detained by police nearby, the Old Bailey was told.

Prior to the attack, James is alleged to have stabbed a man in his 20s in the back on the street, the court heard.

Minutes later, at about 07:50 BST, he allegedly kicked at the door of Kaur’s home and broke in while the family-of-three were asleep in bed.

Prosecutor Charlene Sumnall said Kaur’s husband awoke to the sound of a scream from his wife and saw a figure leaving the bedroom.

Kaur suffered a stab wound to the chest and was pronounced dead at 08:26 BST.

The defendant was treated in hospital before he was taken into custody.

He was charged with Kaur’s murder, as well as attempted murder and possession of a blade.

On Thursday, James, of Mercer Place, Pinner, west London, appeared at the Old Bailey by videolink from Wormwood Scrubs.

Judge Nigel Lickley KC set a plea hearing for 1 October and James was remanded into custody.
