A man in his 70s has died after a fire at an apartment building in Monaghan Town.

It happened at Rowantree Court in Mulach Glas shortly after 20:00 local time on Tuesday.

Gardaí (Irish police) said the man was fatally injured during the incident and was pronounced dead at the scene.

They said the results of a post-mortem examination will determine the course of their investigation.

Residents were moved out of the building on Tuesday night, but it is understood have since been allowed to return.

The scene remains preserved for examination.
