Man from Cambridge charged with murder after death of student

A man has been charged with murder following the death of a student from Saudi Arabia.

Cambridgeshire Police was called to Mill Park in Cambridge on Friday at about 23:27 BST.

Twenty-year-old Mohammed Algasim – in the city on a 10-week study placement – was pronounced dead at the scene.

Chas Corrigan, 21, of Holbrook Road, Cambridge, has been charged with murder and possession of a knife in a public place.

He is due to appear at Peterborough Magistrates Court later.

A 50-year-old man, also from Cambridge, was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and remains in custody.

A post-mortem examination is due to take place on Tuesday.

In a statement, EF International Language Campus, a Cambridge-based language school that teaches English to overseas students, said it was “deeply saddened” by the death of one of its students.

“We are providing support to all students and staff affected by this tragic event and have organised counselling sessions,” it added.
