Man dies after collision with forklift on Christmas Eve

A 23-year-old man has died following a collision with a forklift in County Down on Christmas Eve, police have said.

It happened on a laneway off the Holywood Road in the Craigantlet area of Newtownards at about 13:00 GMT.

Callum McVeigh, from the Crossgar area, was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was a footballer who played for Killyleagh YC Football Club who said in a post on social media that he made a “meaningful and lasting impression”.

Portadown Football Club, where Callum was a former player, held a minute’s silence before kick off in their Boxing Day Mid Ulster derby against Glenavon in his memory.

A silence was also held at Linfield ahead of their match against Glentoran. Callum had played for Linfield Swifts previously.
