Man detained over Royal Bolton Hospital attack on three people

A man arrested in connection with an attack at a hospital in which three people were injured has been detained under the Mental Health Act.

A man in his 30s was left with ear injuries in the incident at Royal Bolton Hospital on Friday, while a woman in her 40s and another man, in his 70s, had minor injuries, Greater Manchester Police said.

The force said the man with ear injuries was admitted to hospital but had since been discharged, with the other casualties treated at the scene.

A 22-year-old man held on suspicion of actual bodily harm, grievous bodily harm with intent, assaulting a police officer, and a racially aggravated public order offence has been detained under the Mental Health Act.

Police have appealed for witnesses.

Det Ch Insp Mike Sharples said: “We understand that an incident of this nature has caused concern for members of the public who were in hospital at the time, staff and the wider community.

“Officers are continuing to engage with staff and patients at the hospital to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the incident.”
