A man who broke a police officer’s shoulder by barging into him while trying to flee has been jailed.

Jerome Gibson was running from police in Nottingham last summer when he decided to lean forward and run into an officer, leaving him with injuries which later needed surgery.

Despite making his escape and leaving the city for a number of days, he was later tracked down and detained with the help of police dog Seth.

On Monday, at Nottingham Crown Court, Gibson, of no fixed address, was jailed for three years and eight months after he admitted committing grievous bodily harm without intent and other offences.

On 2 June 2025, knife crime teams patrolling Radford, Nottingham, were watching a group of drug users when they spotted Gibson riding an e-bike, wearing ski goggles and a full-face balaclava.

The 22-year-old ditched his high-powered cycle and ran from officers.

He was confronted by an officer in Hucknall Road, where he decided to run into them.

He then fled into a property and avoided arrest.

But after returning to Nottingham, he was tracked to a Bilborough address, and despite jumping from a back window he was arrested in a nearby garden.

Gibson pleaded guilty to committing grievous bodily harm without intent, threats with an offensive weapon against two people, and two counts of criminal damage to their property in Langwith Junction, Derbyshire, on 8 May 2024.

Det Con Bethanie Foster, of Nottinghamshire Police, said Gibson had gone to “great lengths to escape justice”.

She added: “We simply will not tolerate assaults on police officers, or other emergency workers.

“Although frontline officers, like those on the knife crime team, are prepared to place themselves in harm’s way on a daily basis, coming under attack like this while on duty is not part of the job description.”
