A bulldozer has been driven into a quiet village pub while punters were midway through their evening pints, destroying the front porch and damaging the outside walls.

Police were called just after 20:45 GMT on Thursday, after reports that a JCB had driven over an unoccupied parked car and crashed into the New Inn, in the hamlet of Cefn Rhigos, Rhondda Cynon Taf.

A 35-year-old man, from Rhigos, has been arrested on suspicion of attempted GBH, dangerous driving, criminal damage and driving under the influence. He is currently in hospital.

No one else was injured in the incident, with police saying they are “actively investigating the circumstances” surrounding the incident.

South Wales Police have said they believe the incident “may have been targeted, rather than random”, and have confirmed they are not looking for anyone else.

A BBC reporter at the scene said the front porch of the New Inn had been destroyed, with the pitched roof lying on the ground, and some of the exterior wall was badly damaged.

Locals reported a JCB vehicle was seen driving away from the pub shortly before 21:00 yesterday evening.

A police statement thanked members of the public for their support throughout the incident “which was swiftly brought under control”.

Officers stressed there is no ongoing risk to the public.

A section of Rhigos Road has been closed and a police cordon is in place.
