A major character is set to return for the fourth series of the award-winning police drama Blue Lights, which is set in Northern Ireland.

The creators have said the next instalment of the BAFTA and RTS award-winning series will “reveal a lot of dark secrets”.

In a dramatic twist, Game of Thrones actor Richard Dormer will return as Gerry Cliff, a character who died during the first series.

The new season will also see the return of Hannah McClean as solicitor Jen Robinson and Jonathan Harden as disgraced former inspector Jonty.

Those behind the series say the characters will return “in an episode that will answer important questions from the past.”

The BBC say series four will focus on constables Grace Ellis, Tommy Foster and Annie Conlon, three years into their jobs.

While they continue to face threats on the streets, the murder trial of Gerry Cliff is ongoing and exposes a long-buried secret that leads to chaos inside the police, and across the criminal underworld.

As they grapple with big decisions about their future, Grace, Tommy and Annie must find the courage to face the greatest threat they have ever encountered – the truth.

A date has not yet been confirmed as to when the drama will return

Co- creators Declan Lawn and Adam Patterson have said they cannot wait to start filming the new series.

They said it would examine “what justice looks like in Belfast today, and ties together the past, present, and futures of Grace, Annie and Tommy in an action-packed story”.

“We’re very excited to bring this series of Blue Lights to audiences,” they added.

BBC Drama commissioning editor Nick Lambon said Blue Lights had gripped and entertained millions of viewers across three series.

“Declan and Adam’s scripts will once again have us all on the edge of our seats,” he said.

He said Gerry Cliff was “such an integral part of series one” and “to have Richard Dormer back alongside our talented cast is a dream come true”.

“We are over the moon to be back filming in Belfast, and with so many twists and turns in store, fans of Blue Lights have plenty to look forward to,” he said.

A date has not yet been confirmed as to when the drama will return.
