M56 lorry fire: Crews tackle ‘thick smoke’ as motorway closes

A section of the M56 is closed due to a “large” lorry fire.

Fire crews were called to the eastbound side of the M56 near Frodsham, Cheshire following reports of a blaze at about 19:38 BST.

Two fire engines are at the scene of the fire on the hard shoulder between junctions 14 and 12, and are currently working to control “a significant amount of smoke”.

A Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “The fire is causing a significant amount of thick smoke and crews have requested that both carriageways be closed while they deal with the incident.”

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are using hose reel water jets to tackle the blaze.

Police and ambulance services are also at the scene. It is not yet known if there are any casualties.

North West Motorway Police said drivers should remain in their vehicles on a post on X, external.

Drivers have been advised to avoid the area.
