M5 in Somerset closed to traffic as risk of overhead cables falling

The M5 in Somerset is closed in both directions due to a risk that overhead electricity cables could fall into the road.

The motorway is shut between junction 22 (Burnham-on-Sea) and junction 23 (Bridgwater North) with National Highways reporting delays of 115 minutes with up to eight miles of congestion both ways.

National Grid said in a statement: “Our engineers are on site and working as quickly and safely as possible to repair the fault.

“We know this will be frustrating for people facing longer journeys in the hot weather, and are sorry for the disruption caused. We will reopen the road as soon as it is safe to do so.”

National Highways warned people to avoid the area and try to plan their journey.
