National HighwaysThe M1 motorway has been closed southbound near Wakefield after a serious collision.
The crash happened between junction 41 heading to Carr Gate and 40 for the A638 Wakefield Road.
Initially, the northbound and southbound carriageways were closed in both directions but National Highways said the northbound side had since reopened.
The southbound carriageway was likely to remain shut for several hours for investigation work, National Highways said.
West Yorkshire Police said: “The closure is likely to remain in place for some time.
“Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes.”
