Londonderry: Traffic warning after car fire closes Foyle Bridge

Police in Londonderry have warned about traffic delays in the city after a vehicle fire closed the Foyle Bridge.

The bridge is closed in both directions after emergency services worked to put out the car fire and further clear the scene.

Police said the fire had caused tailbacks in the city and urged drivers to take alternative routes where possible.

In a social media post the PSNI said: “The Foyle Bridge has been closed to all traffic as emergency services work to clear the scene of the car fire and to make the road safe.”

The Northern Ireland Fire Service (NIFRS) said crews were called to the bridge at 13:00 BST on Thursday following reports that a car was on fire.

NIFRS said the “cause of the fire is believed to have been accidental ignition”, adding it has now been put out and the scene handed over to police.

A structural inspection of the bridge has been ongoing since mid July, that includes a 30mph speed limit and temporary lane closures.
