Votes are being counted to decide who will form India’s next government. Hundreds of millions took part in the world’s biggest ever election, voting over seven phases between 19 April and 1 June to choose MPs for the Lok Sabha, the lower house of parliament.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is hoping for a rare third consecutive term – he’s set an ambitious target of 400 out of 543 seats for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). More than two dozen opposition parties, including the once-dominant Congress, are taking them on as part of a coalition called the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA).
