Limavady fire: Boy, 12, arrested on suspicion of arson

A 12-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of arson and subsequently bailed following a major fire at a derelict building in Limavady.

The blaze broke out at a derelict former nightclub building in the Catherine Street area of the town just after 17:40 BST on Thursday.

More than 50 firefighters tackled the blaze and it was brought under control in the early hours of Friday.

The boy was arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life and has since been bailed pending further enquiries, the police have said.

Catherine Street remains closed with diversions in place and motorists are advised to avoid the area.

The police have said the investigation into the fire remains ongoing but that they are treating it as “deliberate ignition”.
