Celtic winger Liel Abada has left the Scottish champions to join Major League Soccer side Charlotte FC.

The Israel international has moved for a reported £8m feeexternal-link and signed a deal until 2026 after sitting out Celtic’s last five games due to personal issues.

Manager Brendan Rodgers has previously said Abada, 22, was not ready to play amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

He has faced pressure from compatriots to leave Celtic after some fans’ support for Palestine.

Abada joined Celtic in July 2021 from his homeland and was a key player under Ange Postecoglou, scoring 28 goals and providing 20 assists as the Parkhead club won five out of six domestic trophies.

After signing a new four-year deal last summer, injury derailed Abada’s campaign as he spent three months out with a thigh issue, and Rodgers has spoken at length about the winger’s situation.

“This is a young guy, 22 years of age, far, far away from home,” the Celtic boss said in February.

“People can talk about what’s going on there and then they can forget about it. This is the reality for him, this is his life. Every single day, every night, families in a war.

“So it’s a really, really tough situation for him. On a human level, I have real, real empathy for him.”

Charlotte general manager Zoran Krneta said: “Liel has been one of the most exciting young wingers in Europe and we’re delighted to welcome him to Charlotte.

“He’s an elite goalscorer and chance creator who is a proven winner that is determined to bring trophies home to the club and our supporters.”
