Jonas Vingegaard claims maiden Paris-Nice title

Two-time Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard claimed his first Paris-Nice title after finishing second in Sunday’s finale.

Vingegaard was pipped to the line on stage eight by Frenchman Lenny Martinez but had already done enough to stay clear in the general classification.

Colombia’s Harold Tejada – winner of Friday’s sixth stage – crossed the line third in a small group seven seconds behind the winner.

Vingegaard, 29, finished four minutes and 23 seconds clear of Daniel Martinez to seal the title after the Colombian slipped adrift following a crash with 50km remaining.

Victory sets the Dane on a positive path before his tilt at a Giro d’Italia and Tour de France double in May and July respectively.

After Saturday’s stage had to be shortened because of heavy snow on the summit finish, conditions were much better for Sunday’s 145km stage, which started and ended in Nice on the Allianz Riviera.

Vingegaard led Martinez to break away from the peloton for the final climb but the Frenchman found an extra gear to come out on top in the sprint.
