Jesse Lingard becomes first British player to score in Copa do Brasil as Corinthians win

Former England forward Jesse Lingard has become the first British player to score in Brazil’s domestic cup, according to his club Corinthians.

The ex-Manchester United man opened his account for Corinthians in their Copa do Brasil fifth-round first-leg win at third-tier side Barra on Tuesday.

The 33-year-old, who has 32 England caps, volleyed home the game’s only goal in first-half stoppage time before being replaced on 62 minutes.

It was Lingard’s second start for the seven-time Brazilian champions and his seventh appearance in all competitions.

He joined the club last month until the end of 2026 having been a free agent after leaving South Korean side FC Seoul in December.

Corinthians are fourth-bottom in the Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A after 12 games and host Vasco da Gama in the league on Sunday.

However, they are top of their group in the Copa Libertadores after winning their first two games and next face Uruguayan side Penarol at home on 1 May.
