Johanna Walsh romped to an emphatic win in the Irish Oaks at The Curragh after stablemate Thundering On was declared a non-runner on Saturday morning.

Thundering On had been fancied to complete a classic double for trainer Joseph O’Brien after blowing away the opposition in the Oaks at Epsom in June.

Johanna Walsh was a well-backed 7-2 shot under jockey Dylan Browne McMonagle and pulled clear of a previously closely bunched pack from two furlongs out to win by four lengths from Inis Mor (11/2), with Sparan Nua (8/1) third.

“It was straightforward from the get-go. She is a very straightforward horse and is improving with every run,” said Browne McMonagle on RTE after the race.

“She got herself into a very good position and it was a lovely race to ride, without any setbacks and she was comfortable going into the straight.

“She has taken another big step forward.”

The winning jockey had rode Thundering On from last place to first to win the Epsom Oaks in June.
