Newark Road is closed following the “firearm-related incident”

An investigation is under way after a man was shot by armed police in Nottinghamshire.

Nottinghamshire Police said it was called to a “firearm-related incident” in Wellow Road, Ollerton, on Monday at about 00:10 BST.

Armed officers were deployed and a police weapon was discharged just after 01:00. A 56-year-old man sustained a gunshot injury and was taken to hospital where he remains.

He has been arrested, along with a 32-year-old man, on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to cause violence, the force – which has made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) over the incident – added.

Road closures are in place along Newark Road from Kelsey Avenue.

Red traffic cones are pictured along a road with a police van and police officer behind the cordon.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct has launched an investigation

Officers are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident, police added.

The IOPC also confirmed it had launched an independent investigation.

Temporary Chief Constable Steve Cooper said: “I know this news will be concerning for the community in Ollerton and the wider public in Nottinghamshire. However, I want to reassure you, incidents where officers discharge their firearms are incredibly rare.

“It is right that there is a full investigation into the circumstances around this incident, and a mandatory referral has now been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

“This process must take its course and while that is ongoing, it would be inappropriate for us to comment further.”
