Increase in abortions carried out in Northern Ireland

There has been an increase in the number of abortions carried out in Northern Ireland, according to the latest official figures.

Statistics from the Department of Health show that in the year since March 2020, when the law was changed to allow terminations, there were almost 1,600 procedures.

That figure then rose to more than 2,100 between April 2022 and March 2023.

Of those, 60 abortions were carried out on those aged under 18.

Some 1,663 were carried out on those aged between 18 and 34 and 409 terminations on women aged over 35.
