Looking younger not only involves having a good skincare routine, but also a good makeup routine.

Luckily, Saffron Hughes, makeup artist at FalseEyelashes.co.uk, has shared which two mistakes might be “adding years to your appearance”.

She argued that while ageing is a natural and beautiful process, you could be “adding years to the face” just by the way you apply your makeup when that may not be your intention.

Saffron said: “The way we do our makeup should change with age and by following some professional advice and doing it properly, it can deliver a fresh face.”

One of these makeup mistakes involves keeping your brows very thin like the style in the 90s.

As we age, eyebrows tend to thin naturally, but for a youthful-looking brow that also frames your face, Saffron recommends that should be fuller.

She recommends taking a fine brow pencil and creating small strokes to give the illusion of a full and slightly arched brow that is going to “lift the face”.

The artist noted that drawing on brow hairs makes them “look more realistic” than using powder or gel formulas. Although it takes a little more time, Saffron claimed that the “difference is magic”.

Aside from brows, choosing the right lip shade can give a more youthful appearance.

Dark lipsticks, while a seasonal staple, can actually “add years to the face”.

As people age their lips become thinner and lose their definition so it’s tempting to overdraw the lips in order to give the illusion of a fuller pout. However, it’s better to ease away from darker shades.

Instead, Saffron recommends lining your lips with a colour that’s no more than one or two shades bolder than a person’s natural lip colour, then following up with lipgloss.

She said: “The gloss creates dimension for the lips, gives the illusion of fuller, younger-looking pout.”

Underneath lipstick, lip balms are great as they can play a role in “reducing the signs of ageing”.
