How Neil ‘Nello’ Baldwin got Kevin Keegan to be president of his Staffordshire football club

Baldwin said Keegan was “a great friend of mine”.

“He was… president of my football club. I wrote to him and he met me and he said he would do that for me,” he added.

The ex-Stoke kit man remembered that he went to see Keegan, “a lovely man altogether”, at the former England manager’s house.

He said: “It’s very sad, because I was only with him last year at a football club dinner near Macclesfield.”

Baldwin has close ties to Keele University, where his mum worked as a cleaner, and in 2013, the university awarded him an honorary degree.

Former Football Supporters Association chair Malcolm Clarke, who knew Keegan both through the fan group and Baldwin, said he thought the ex-Stoke kit man and former manager had met at a game.

“As we know, Neil has a habit of going up to famous people and introducing himself and becoming, quotes, very good friends of them,” he added.
