A Scottish hill race which was started for a bet in the 1970s has just celebrated its 50th event.

About 450 people from across Scotland took part in this year’s Dumyat Hill Race, which is organised by the University of Stirling.

The race was founded in 1971 when a university lecturer laid a £1 bet that no-one could run to the top of Dumyat Hill and back again in under an hour.

A university student took up the challenge and won the wager with three minutes to spare.

The event involves an 8km run starting in the grounds of the university with a 418m climb up Dumyat Hill.

The race has become a popular addition to the Scottish hill racing calendar, with competitive runners completing it in just over 30 minutes.
