A 19th century church building in Glasgow has been badly damaged by an overnight fire.

Emergency crews were called to the derelict former Pollokshaws Parish Church on Shawbridge Street at about 02:45 on Sunday morning after flames were seen coming from inside the building.

Six appliances and a height vehicle were dispatched to scene and the fire was only fully extinguished on Sunday afternoon. A small number of surrounding buildings were evacuated as a precaution.

Police Scotland said an investigation into the cause of the fire was under way.

Images from the scene show the church, which dates from 1843 and is B-listed, charred with the roof caved in and the walls badly damaged.

Glasgow City Council has urged drivers to avoid the area.

Shawbridge Street remains closed between Netherauldhouse Road and Shawholm Crescent.

A spokesperson said: “Road users are advised to use alternative routes and delays are to be expected.”
