Highland Council planning 95 new homes in Ullapool

Highland Council plans to build 95 homes in Ullapool.

A mix of affordable housing for rent and private properties has been proposed for an area of vacant land west and north of the fishing village’s golf course.

The plans are currently going through the local authority’s planning system.

Local residents have raised concerns about a lack of affordable homes in Ullapool, and surrounding area, in recent years.

A report published by Highland Community Planning Partnership last December said Wester Ross along with the Lochalsh and Strathpeffer areas faced challenges around affordable homes.

It said holiday lets and second homes were “prevalent” and this was the cause of “significant frustration” over property prices and also limited housing choices for local people.

The report said community trusts and housing associations provided essential affordable options.

Highland Council has committed to addressing a lack of housing in its region, but has estimated an extra 24,000 homes are needed over the next 10 years.

Last year it said there was also an urgent need to have accommodation available for people filling an expected 8,400 jobs to be created by the new Inverness and Cromarty Firth Green Freeport.
