Guernsey waste team found lost wedding rings in rubbish at tip

A woman praised the “absolute heroes” who “worked tirelessly” to find her lost engagement and wedding rings which were accidentally thrown out in a bin bag when she was decluttering her home.

Katie Thomas lost her rings after clearing out some drawers, and realised they may have made their way to the tip after being put in the bin by her three-year-old daughter by mistake.

She contacted Guernsey Waste who “initially said to me we think your black bag has already gone through the processor” but tracked her visit to the tip on CCTV and then started searching at Longue Hougue.

Mrs Thomas said they “went above and beyond” to identify her bin bag.

She was able to take the bin bag home and search it and explained the team “quite literally dug through mountains of rubbish to reunite me with my rings.

She said: “It truly was like finding a needle in a haystack, but they did it – and I’m beyond grateful.

“When I realised that the rings were lost I felt sick because of the sentimental value of the rings, they almost become a part of you.

“When we found them it was almost like the biggest release. I didn’t know whether to cry or not cry happy tears. We were so relieved.”

She added: “We can’t thank the team anymore for what they did.

“Their kindness, determination, and good humour turned what could’ve been a heart-breaking loss into an unbelievable happy ending.

“They did so much that they didn’t have to do.”

She said she will be more careful about where she puts her rings in future.

She said: “If my rings come off they will go in a little locked box.”

She added: “It will be a story that will live to tell as she (my daughter) gets older.”
