Greyhound racing – what does the future hold in its 100th year?

“It would be lovely to get to the 100th year and that’s it, call it a day.”

As it enters its centenary year, supporters of greyhound racing say the sport has a long future ahead of it, but opponents are calling for it to be banned.

Once packing out stadiums across the country, greyhound racing is facing extinction in Wales and Scotland, and animal charities including the Dogs Trust and RSPCA are calling for a ban.

We followed Hannah Fenwick at a greyhound race in Newcastle – she has grown up in the sport and says from a young age she has dreamt of taking over the business from her dad.

She says the dogs are “more cared for” than themselves and the sport “a hundred million per cent has a future”.
