Graeme Van Buuren: Gloucestershire all-rounder quits captaincy

Gloucestershire all-rounder Graeme van Buuren has relinquished the county’s red-ball captaincy after three years in the role.

The 34-year-old succeeded Chris Dent at the start of the 2022 season but could not prevent Gloucestershire’s relegation from the top flight of the County Championship.

Since then, the Bristol-based side have struggled in Division Two, finishing bottom in 2023 and seventh out of eight teams last season.

Van Buuren, who grew up in South Africa before joining Gloucestershire in 2016, will continue to represent the county across all formats.

Gloucestershire head coach Mark Alleyne said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed working with GVB, and he represents everything I would like in a Gloucestershire player.

“His loyalty and authenticity are characteristics that resonate very well with me. I truly admire the stint he has done for us and look forward to more good work as he rejoins the ‘pack’.”

Gloucestershire have said that conversations about Van Buuren’s successor were “ongoing” ahead of the new season, which begins in early April.
